Exploration of abrasive and bonding agent issues in resin diamond grinding wheels
2025-04-22
Resin diamond grinding wheels are prone to errors during processing and manufacturing, because the manufacturing of resin diamond grinding wheels involves multiple disciplines and composite materials, resulting in numerous and complex causes. Resin diamond grinding wheels are complex systems composed of various main and auxiliary raw materials; the main materials are abrasives and bonding agents, while auxiliary materials include fillers, reinforcing materials, and colorants.
1. Issues to Consider Regarding Abrasives
Currently, the quality of abrasives on the market varies considerably, mainly manifesting as:
(1) The chemical composition of the abrasives is often qualified, but their physical properties are poor; this mainly manifests in the difference in the packing density of the abrasives compared to those from other countries.
(2) The particle size distribution of the abrasives is chaotic and significantly different from the standard specifications; this mainly manifests in the difference in the basic particle content of the same particle size abrasives compared to those from other countries.
2. Regarding the bonding agent, mainly phenolic resin:
(1) The problem of resin quality stability, especially the high and low content of free phenol in the resin. An excessively high free phenol content will accelerate the pyrolysis of the resin after the resin diamond grinding wheel is heated and cured, affecting the strength of the grinding wheel;
(2) The uniformity of mixing resin powder and hexamethylenetetramine. Hexamethylenetetramine, as a curing agent for the resin, insufficient addition of hexamethylenetetramine leads to incomplete curing of the resin, affecting the strength and hardness of the grinding wheel; an excessive amount results in excess hexamethylenetetramine not binding with the resin, decomposing and volatilizing during the curing process, increasing the pores in the grinding wheel, and reducing its strength and hardness.
(3) Bonding agent particle size is too coarse or too fine:
It is generally believed that a fine bonding agent particle size is preferable, which helps to ensure uniform distribution of the bonding agent. If the particle size is too coarse, the molding material is not easily mixed uniformly, affecting the hardness and strength of the grinding wheel. Even for resin sheet cutting grinding wheels and abrasive cutting wheels with coarser particle sizes, the selected bonding agent (resin powder) particle size should be finer.
However, if the particle size of the phenolic resin powder is too fine, it will bring difficulties to mixing, making it difficult to achieve uniformity of the mixed material, which in turn affects the cutting and grinding performance of the resin diamond grinding wheel.
